چکیده
Free full text available from www.ijccm.org A b st ra ct We present three cases of iatrogenic tracheal injury. Two patients suffered acute tracheal injuries during anesthesia/surgery, one was managed surgically and the other conservatively. The third case is a delayed tracheal injury presenting as a fistula. The reasons for surgical vs conservative management of tracheal injuries and preventive measures are discussed.

Intraoperative tracheal reconstruction with bovine pericardial patch following iatrogenic rupture
INTRODUCTION Iatrogenic injuries of the membranous trachea have become increasingly common and may trigger a cascade of immediate life-threatening complications. CASE PRESENTATION A case of a 48-year-old man with an iatrogenic membranous tracheal wall rupture after double-lumen intubation during Ivor Lewis esophagogastrectomy is presented. Tracheal injury was successfully managed surgically w...

Tracheal lacerations are iatrogenic, localized, low impact injuries with longitudinal tears (in about 1:20,000 intubations). In contrast traumatic tracheobronchial ruptures are high velocity injuries with horizontal transections. Between 1986 and 2002, we treated 27 tracheobronchial injuries (8 bronchial 3 of them iatrogenic, 19 tracheal 17 of them iatrogenic (þ1 horizontal rupture þ 1 tracheoe...

BACKGROUND We reviewed our experience with non-iatrogenic traumatic cervical esophageal perforations, paying particular attention to factors affecting the outcome of such cases. METHODS In total, 30 patients treated surgically between 1980 and 2008 for non-iatrogenic traumatic cervical esophageal perforation in our clinic were reviewed. RESULTS There were 25 male and 5 female patients with ...

A IRWAY control is one of the most important tenets of anesthetic practice. Asphyxia and tracheal laceration in infants are extremely rare, but life-threatening, complications. Despite many reviews in the literature regarding tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) and esophageal atresia, 4 no case of tracheal injury following the aberrant passage of a gastrostomy catheter has been reported. The presen...

OBJECTIVE To illustrate a case of an iatrogenic mucosal tear in the trachea which caused a one-way valve effect, obstructing the airway and manifesting as post-extubation stridor. CASE REPORT We report a case of iatrogenic tracheal mucosal tear secondary to violent movement during intubation. The patient presented with post-extubation stridor that worsened over three days. Initial evidence su...
